How to Choose a Therapist

Choosing a therapist is very important. The working relationship between a client and therapist is the foundation for all change and growth to take place. While there are many variables to consider when picking a therapist, here are just a few things to consider:

  • Do I feel comfortable being completely open with this person?
  • Does the therapist have convenient hours available to me?
  • Does the therapist take insurance or have a sliding fee scale that fits my budget?

The most important factor is comfort level and connection with the therapist. If a client does not feel comfortable with their therapist, they will be less likely to speak openly to them, and hence it will be very difficult to make much progress. After a few sessions together, if the client does not feel comfortable with their therapist, it is recommended to discuss this with the therapist and/or look for someone different. The working relationship between a client and therapist is the foundation for all change and growth to take place.

Another thing to consider, of course, is finances. Call your insurance company to check what your therapy benefits are before you choose someone. If you do not have insurance it is important to consider how much you can afford to pay out of pocket.
